Aim

The intention of this PhD project is to evaluate the impacts of different types of organic products chain on the sustainability of rural development in China. Based on the overview of organic products chains in China, integrated impacts between different types of organic product chain will be evaluated using assessment framework. The objectives are:

  • To establish an overview of organic products chains (from production base to market) in China
  • To describe the influence of different types of organic products chains to sustainable rural development, through case studies
  • To give quantified and qualified assessments for the impacts of selected organic product chains on sustainable rural development
Background Organic agriculture can contribute to meaningful socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in the developing countries. On one hand, this is due to the application of organic principles, which means efficient management of local resource (e.g. local seed varieties, manure, etc) and therefore cost-effectiveness. On the other hand, the market for organic products—at local and international level—has tremendous growth prospects and offers creative producers and exporters in the South world excellent opportunities to improve their income and living conditions. Establishing whether organic agriculture is a viable alternative for a particular holding needs to be carried out on a case—by—case basis. What can organic agriculture contribute to achieving socially and ecologically sustainable development in the developing countries? To date, no systematic attempt has been made to evaluate the benefits and effects of organic products chain. The aim of this PhD project, as one subproject of Global Org, is to evaluate the impacts of different types of organic products chain on the sustainability of rural development in China, based on experiences gained in practice.
